Emergency Preparedness: Attending First Aid and CPR Trainings

By Jasmeet K Aulakh Getting the proper emergency first aid training is of utmost importance these days. This is because you can never be sure when you might face situations that demand such a skill. We live in a world where bad things happen all the time. More often than not, such situations develop unexpectedly. We are living in a random and an increasingly unpredictable world, after all. Emergency situations are very serious and should never be taken lightly. Being prepared often decides the outcome of life and death situations. That being said, we all need to do whatever is necessary to make sure that we are prepared for such emergencies. Knowing How to Perform CPR Knowledge of basic first aid skills is crucial to an emergency situation. CPR is perhaps one of the most well-known and one of the most useful emergency skills there is. It is used for victims who have ceased breathing and whose hearts have stopped beating. CPR is a technique that was not only designed to be a means to revive the victim, but it also ensures that there is a continuous flow of blood to the victim's body. It is important to note here that a person can suffer severe complications (the worst of which would include permanent brain damage) or even die due to a lack of oxygenated blood in a span of 4-8 minutes. That being said, a quick response time is vital to ensuring that the victim doesn't die. The CPR procedure itself is simple enough to perform. It follows a simple cycle of 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths. The compressions need to be done fast and hard. The victim's chest needs to sink by at least 2 inches with each pump. You also need to make sure that there is no blockage in the victim's airway before administering rescue breaths. However, if you don't have a CPR certification, it is highly recommended that you call for help in the form of emergency services before performing the technique yourself. This way they can guide you throughout the whole process. Attending First Aid Classes Though there are a number of articles and reading materials readily available about emergency first aid skills, none of these can actually prepare you for the real thing. They are poor substitutes at best and should be read purely for purposes of information. That is why it is of utmost importance that every one of us takes some form of the basic first aid skills training. It is the only way to learn about emergency techniques. These classes are taught by medical professionals and certified emergency workers. They make use of realistic models to effectively demonstrate the necessary emergency procedures. They also present you with realistic scenarios and possible complications that may arise during an actual emergency situation. At the end of the class, before you are able to get your CPR certification, students are given a test. This is the best way to ensure that the students were able to grasp and correctly apply the emergency skills taught to them at class. The Benefits of First Aid Training in the Workplace

By

Injuries, accidents and illnesses can happen at any time. According to the Health and Safety (First-aid) Regulations 1981, every workplace in the UK is required to make sure their employees have access to first aid equipment (a well-stocked first-aid box) and facilities, along with information about first-aid arrangements and a designated person to set those arrangements in motion if the need arises.
Ensuring that employees know the company has these arrangements in place, and that they would have immediate provision of first-aid if an accident was to occur, should be a fundamental priority of all reputable employers. Workplace first-aid training can include CPR, injury prevention, how to control bleeding, treat wounds or burns and manage someone who is unconscious, who has had a seizure or is in shock, what to do when someone is choking, has been poisoned or has a broken bone or sprain, how to recognise the symptoms of common medical conditions such as stroke and heart attack, and how to properly record and report incidents.
Having a number of staff trained in first-aid brings a company a number of benefits, such as:
  • In the event of a serious incident, a trained first-aider could save the life or lives of those affected by taking immediate action, as they can be on the scene far quicker than the emergency services.

  • Research shows that workplaces with staff trained in first-aid are safer overall and suffer fewer incidents as all employees become more aware of safety.

  • Trained employees use the knowledge gained in their training to behave safely, proactively assisting and encouraging others to do the same, which reduces risks and prevents incidents from happening.

  • In the event of an incident, trained staff may be able to help prevent further injury.

  • The more staff who are trained in first-aid, the more likely it will be that one of them will be on site in the event of an incident.

  • Trained first-aiders are already familiar with the company first-aid kit and how to use its contents, which can save time in an emergency.

  • They are also more likely than un-trained staff to know how to react and behave in an emergency situation, as their training should have given them the ability to confidently and effectively manage it.

  • Training needn't take long - many courses are complete within a few hours. First-aid training consultancies can tailor their training around a specific workplace, taking into consideration possible risks employees face in their roles so they are adequately informed and can modify their behaviour.
When choosing a First Aid training provider, make sure you look into whether they are qualified to deliver the training and are certified by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). It's a good idea to get all H&S, first aid, fire, food safety training from the same provider so all training is in context for their specific business and the training provider know the goals of your training and the company itself.
