Emergency Preparedness: Attending First Aid and CPR Trainings

By Jasmeet K Aulakh Getting the proper emergency first aid training is of utmost importance these days. This is because you can never be sure when you might face situations that demand such a skill. We live in a world where bad things happen all the time. More often than not, such situations develop unexpectedly. We are living in a random and an increasingly unpredictable world, after all. Emergency situations are very serious and should never be taken lightly. Being prepared often decides the outcome of life and death situations. That being said, we all need to do whatever is necessary to make sure that we are prepared for such emergencies. Knowing How to Perform CPR Knowledge of basic first aid skills is crucial to an emergency situation. CPR is perhaps one of the most well-known and one of the most useful emergency skills there is. It is used for victims who have ceased breathing and whose hearts have stopped beating. CPR is a technique that was not only designed to be a means to revive the victim, but it also ensures that there is a continuous flow of blood to the victim's body. It is important to note here that a person can suffer severe complications (the worst of which would include permanent brain damage) or even die due to a lack of oxygenated blood in a span of 4-8 minutes. That being said, a quick response time is vital to ensuring that the victim doesn't die. The CPR procedure itself is simple enough to perform. It follows a simple cycle of 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths. The compressions need to be done fast and hard. The victim's chest needs to sink by at least 2 inches with each pump. You also need to make sure that there is no blockage in the victim's airway before administering rescue breaths. However, if you don't have a CPR certification, it is highly recommended that you call for help in the form of emergency services before performing the technique yourself. This way they can guide you throughout the whole process. Attending First Aid Classes Though there are a number of articles and reading materials readily available about emergency first aid skills, none of these can actually prepare you for the real thing. They are poor substitutes at best and should be read purely for purposes of information. That is why it is of utmost importance that every one of us takes some form of the basic first aid skills training. It is the only way to learn about emergency techniques. These classes are taught by medical professionals and certified emergency workers. They make use of realistic models to effectively demonstrate the necessary emergency procedures. They also present you with realistic scenarios and possible complications that may arise during an actual emergency situation. At the end of the class, before you are able to get your CPR certification, students are given a test. This is the best way to ensure that the students were able to grasp and correctly apply the emergency skills taught to them at class.
